A close look at our lightning protection devices

A visit to the EMC specialist

We wanted to know exactly! Do our lightning protection devices, which we distribute here in Europe from the Japanese manufacturer M-System, really contribute better to protecting against the effects of a lightning strike than others? As long as nothing happens, lightning protection is often dismissed as a minor issue. And if something does happen, the insurance will pay. But what about the availability of spare parts? Waiting months for replacement items has become standard since the pandemic. Critical infrastructure cannot wait months for replacement material.

Good reasons for lightning protection
So there are good reasons for a balanced protection against the effects of a lightning strike, which, by the way, can still have an impact at a distance of up to 1.5 km! So we had Mr. Werner Marti compare our lightning protection devices with inexpensive counterparts. After a tour in his impressive laboratory and some exciting anecdotes we discussed the results of the comparison. The conclusion was quickly clear, you get what you pay! An Ethernet lightning protection device for 15 euros cannot provide reliable protection. With the MDCAT series from M-System, every single Ethernet line is protected by a lightning protection element. A very well thought-out routing of the lines on the printed circuit board leads to an optimal discharge of the overvoltage. The grounding unit built directly into the print makes the MDCAT system a reliable protection element for Ethernet lines.
Werner Marti: This Japanese manufacturer M-System knows exactly what it is doing, every little thing about the device is designed to optimize the lightning protection capability! You can tell that years of experience flow into the development here.
And it is exactly according to these enormously thought-out approaches that all lightning protection devices from M-System are developed. Be it for field buses such as RS-485, RS-422, Profibus or sensor signals such as 4-20 mA, all devices are designed for maximum protection. Special series reliably protect photovoltaic systems and power supplies from the effects of lightning strikes.
Werner Marti and the EMC Laboratory: A Success Story
Werner Marti, a renowned expert in the field of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), has made a significant contribution to the development and improvement of EMC standards throughout his career. His commitment and passion for this field of expertise have made him a respected figure in the industry.
About the person Werner Marti
Born in 1947, Werner Marti grew up in the greater Zurich area. He showed an interest in electronics and electrical engineering at an early age, which inspired him to complete an apprenticeship as an electrician. There he laid the foundation for his later career. After completing his apprenticeship, Werner Marti began his professional career in various companies. There he deepened his knowledge and skills in the field of electronics and developed innovative solutions to minimize interference emissions and increase the immunity of electronic devices.
Over time, Werner recognized the need for a specialized laboratory focused on EMC testing and measurement. In 1992, he founded the EMC Laboratory, an independent facility specializing in EMC testing, certification and consulting services. The EMC Lab quickly became a trusted resource for companies that wanted to ensure their products met EMC standards. The EMC Laboratory received ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation, further underscoring its competence and reliability. Werner Marti and the EMC Lab worked closely with companies in various industries, including automotive manufacturers, electronics companies, medical device manufacturers, and many others. They conducted extensive testing to ensure that electronic devices and systems met regulatory requirements and did not cause unwanted electromagnetic interference. Werner Marti's expertise and leadership skills made him a respected figure in the EMC community. Currently, he is dedicated to existing projects and continues to advise companies and organizations on EMC issues.
