Speed drives |
for the control of synchronous and asynchronous motors |

The task of a frequency converter is to convert the uniform AC voltage provided by the local power grid into an AC voltage whose amplitude and frequency can be changed. If a three-phase motor were to be connected directly to a three-phase mains supply, it would only run at the constant speed typical of the mains frequency. A speed control would not be possible. The frequency converter can be used to supply both synchronous and asynchronous motors with power depending on the load, and by controlling the frequency and voltage, it is possible to continuously adjust the speed or torque of the three-phase motor.
